In many parts of the country, families are getting ready to send kids back to school. Others are still enjoying making the most out of the last few weeks of summer. For all of us, it’s a smart time to review home security measures and make plans for a safer fall. With school starting, families often have a change in routine and homes are more often empty during the day. This is also true if your area starts school later but you’re squeezing in one more family trip or more outings. Summertime thieves know this and take advantage of empty homes and families on the go. Now is not the time to be lax about home security steps. Review Home Security at Start of School: If you have followed our security blogs, hopefully you’ve seen those dedicated to back-to-school time. We have shared ways our security cameras, free mobile app, video doorbell, smart locks and security alerts help keep family members safe. As a quick review, the following are our top 10 home security tips for back to school or any time of year: Use home security cameras to your fullest advantage. Indoor and outdoor security cameras that you view from your home security app are invaluable. Use your Alert 360 app to set alerts when cameras detect unwanted visitors and to ensure children are safe at home after school. In general, be sure to set security system notifications when students arrive home. In addition to when camera activity is detected, Alert 360’s home security systems allow you to set notifications when the system is armed or disarmed. Parents enjoy this security feature when they can’t be home but want to know when kids arrive or leave. Protect your front door with a smart video doorbell. Not only can you use a doorbell camera to see when kids get home safely, it helps protects deliveries too. If your house sits empty for a part of the day, a front door camera is invaluable. With Alert 360’s new Smart Video Doorbell 2.0, you can see beyond your front porch. The new doorbell security camera provides the latest in video analytics, more useful alerts, and 150-degree, HD viewing. It allows you to speak to delivery drivers, to provide instructions on where to leave a package. (With smart locks, you can unlock the door for the delivery to be placed inside.) Or you can let uninvited visitors know you’re watching and ask them why they are there. Teach children front door security. At Alert 360, our families include children and elderly parents. We are huge believers in teaching the basics of front door security. Especially, with an increase in bold thieves and door-to-door scammers. Basic front door security tips include keeping your door locked even when you’re home. You also should never answer the door without screening who is there or knowing why they are there. Studies have shown that many home break-ins occur through the front door. Many thieves will try the front door first, to see if someone is home. Because of this, we suggest steps that help create the appearance that your home is occupied. This includes automated or smart lights and entertainment systems. Also, as we shared above, a video doorbell, with two-way voice, allows you to speak to whoever comes to your door, even if they don’t ring the doorbell. Most activity at your door is normal: friends visiting and family arriving home. It’s easy to create a custom doorbell camera alert, triggered by your kids’ Alert 360 user codes, which sends you a video clip of your family arriving at home. It’s a great way to make sure they’re home safe and know who they’re with. For more tips on front door security, please review our previous blogs on this subject. Our library of home security and business security blogs can be helpful all year long. On this topic, we especially recommend the following security blogs from our website: • Stay Safe when Strangers Knock Ensure sensitive areas are protected. Chances are, there are areas of your home that require extra security whether you are home or not. Sensitive areas include medicine cabinets, liquor cabinets, gun safes and pools. Other sensitive areas that need extra security might include your outdoor shops, storage sheds or gated areas. Indoor and outdoor security cameras can help keep an eye on these areas. Access alerts also help notify you if someone has gained entry to these areas. An Alert 360 home security system allows you to receive notifications and alerts on your smartphone, laptop, or tablet when an area is accessed. The system will also notify the Alert 360 dispatch center, which helps if you miss a notification or cannot call for help. Install keyless entry and smart locks with remote locking/unlocking. The Alert 360 key-free deadbolt lock allows you to lock/unlock your door by entering your pin code on its keypad. You can also control the lock through the Alert 360 mobile app. This ensures stronger front door home security whether your child forgot his keys or to lock the door when leaving. Your child will never be locked out. It’s also easy to ensure the door is locked once your child is safely inside, even if you’re stuck at work. When combined with a front door video doorbell with a two-way voice, you also can control the lock from afar, allowing delivery drivers to leave packages safely inside your home. Include Flex 360 a remote security sensor device that can help in improving security in the back-to-school security planning. The Flex 360 is a battery-powered sensor designed for monitoring property and assets anywhere. This device provides an easy solution for remote security challenges and helps protect everything from toolsheds and gates to boats, ATVs, motorcycles, kayaks and more. It can be used on items in your backyard or on the other side of the country and provides you real-time alerts if the item is tampered with, moved, or opened. Review schooltime routines and have a plan. When everyone in the family knows what to expect and what’s normal, it helps increase safety. Plan together about the route home, time of arrival, and after-school routine. Have agreed upon snacks, chores, or homework plans plus downtime for students to relax safely after school. In the event of an emergency or a missing child, knowing the daily route and routine can help you and the authorities. We also suggest scheduling a daily check-in for peace of mind. It’s easier than ever to call, send a text, or wave to your home security camera. Set a time for this check-in to happen every day with your child. Homeowners with a wireless security system installed and an alarm monitoring app also can receive helpful notifications that show a video of a child entering the home or when a door is opened or closed. Consider Alert 360’s Connected Car OBD GPS tracker for teen drivers and more. Alert 360 Connected Car users receive alerts to unexpected movement such as when your vehicle moves while the engine is off, indicating it may have been towed, crashed into, or stolen; diagnostics such as check engine light, low battery, or low fuel, and driving behavior, such as sudden acceleration, hard braking, and excessive speeding. The Connected Car helps prevent car theft or vandalism and helps keep teen drivers safer. Like the Flex 360, the Connected Car is easy to install and is available through Alert 360 authorized dealers or one of Alert 360’s branch locations across the United States. Many pet owners find great peace of mind when they can check-in and see that all is safe while they’re not home. We suggest using security cameras to peek in using live streaming video. If you have a home security system, you can also set notification alerts that you choose, or check your recorded video clips, to know what’s happening. A sad reality is that pets can be harmed during a break-in, and some breeds are even targeted for theft. Your security system and wireless cameras with video monitoring can help deter and catch any would-be criminals who might threaten your pet. Additionally, “life safety sensors” that can monitor smoke, heat, CO can alert you and your alarm monitoring center, which will contact emergency personnel if there is smoke or fire in your home when you’re not there. Monitored carbon monoxide detectors also ensure help is sent if levels of this dangerous gas become high in your home. We recommend additional security measures to protect your pets whether you have a security system or not. For starters, take a close look around your home and remove any items that can cause injury or make an animal ill, such as small items that might cause choking. To prevent poisoning, securely store cleaners, chemicals, and medications. Paints, mineral spirits, solvents and some cleaning products can be toxic to your pets and cause severe irritation or chemical burns. Be sure to read and follow directions for using and storing these items with your pets in mind. Also, prevent or clean spilled or leaking antifreeze, which can be fatal for pets. Via https://www.alert360.com/2021/08/alert-360-recognizes-alarm-monitoring-success-stories/ Home security expanded to address the increase in stolen cars By: Richard Ginsburg, Alert 360, CEO As a home security and business security company, we keep a close eye on crime trends. We also consider all threats to our customers’ property or valuables, including the family car or commercial fleets. While this past year has seen an upward trend in vehicle damage and theft, there are steps you can take to better secure your expensive vehicles. A Concerning Increase in Vehicle Theft Last year, almost 900,000 car thefts happened in the United States according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. That is an astonishing 9% increase compared to 2019. In addition, there has been a boom in quick and easy theft of car parts, such as catalytic converters. In some cities, such as Wichita, Kan., converter thefts tripled in 2020 according to a recent New York Times article, “Thieves Nationwide are Slithering Under Cars, Swiping Catalytic Converters.” Likewise, in “Catalytic Converter Thefts Soar Along with the Price of Precious Metals,” CBS News reported an average of 1,200 catalytic converter thefts a month across the U.S. in 2020, up sharply from an average of about 280 the previous year. When looking at ways to keep our vehicles safer, we should consider the underlying issues contributing to this increase in car thefts. You might have noticed that when you drive by most car dealerships the lots are unusually barren, with limited inventory. Some of the auto dealers I have visited recently appeared to be closed due to their lack of inventory. The slowdown in manufacturing during the pandemic caused inventory to decrease in 2020. Also, the 2021 chip shortage has not helped. Thousands of cars are sitting across the country waiting for critical parts before they are moved to dealer inventory. The rise in commodity pricing is also making the catalytic converter on your car super valuable, and thieves know it! Adding to that is a tight inventory of used cars and an aging population of cars on the road, leading to the unfortunate increase in car thefts we are seeing. All of these factors create a lucrative stolen car and parts market for desperate thieves. Security Tips for Preventing Vehicle Theft, Damage So, how can you protect your vehicles during times like these? At Alert 360, we recommend the following tips to prevent your car from being stolen or damaged. These security steps can help protect family cars as well as critical commercial vehicles. Always make sure your vehicle is parked in a well-lit area overnight or when at shopping malls. Avoid parking your vehicle in your driveway or outside if possible. If you must park outside of a secure garage, use monitored outdoor security cameras or a smart, two-way voice video doorbell camera to keep an eye on vehicles and alert thieves you’re watching. Although it sounds like common sense, always lock your car, put up all windows and take your keys with you. This is critical even if you are just running in to get a coffee or drop off something. Do not leave valuables like phones, tablets, purses, tools, etc., in your vehicle or in plain sight. These items are like a neon sign, inviting thieves to target your vehicle. Use your smartphone to take a picture of your car registration and VIN number. Quick reporting of a stolen vehicle and having this information handy will aid police in tracking down your car. Consider some of the latest vehicle security technology, such as the Alert 360 Connected Car. With Connected Car, you can track the GPS location of your vehicle within seconds. If your Connected Car device is removed (one of the first things thieves will try), you will be alerted that something is going on so that you can notify the police quickly. Lastly, avoid storing important documents, spare keys, or a garage door opener in your glove compartment. We suggest taking photos of insurance or registration proof and keeping copies with you or on your phone. Thieves can use these documents to obtain your home address and target it next. Easy-to-install Car Security Devices Can Help Our solution to preventing car theft or damage, the Connected Car device, alerts you if your car is stolen, hit/moved, or needs maintenance. This security device also can integrate with your Alert 360 home security system to keep you aware and connected to happenings at home while on the road. However, the Connected Car option is available whether you are an Alert 360 home security customer or not. Essentially the Connected Car communicates with you, even when your vehicle’s engine is off, about specific vehicle details. For example, the device will notify you if your car moves, indicating it may have been towed, crashed into, or stolen. It also can notify you if your check engine light is on or your or fuel or battery is low. If you have a teen driver, it can alert you to driving behavior, such as sudden acceleration, hard braking, and excessive speeding. Increasing the security of your valuables shouldn’t be stressful, so we make installing the Connected Car device easy. It’s compatible with most cars manufactured since 1996. You can opt to plug the Connected Car device into your vehicle’s OBD-II port for easy self-installation. Or, you can visit one of Alert 360’s locations across the United States for assistance. “With busy families of our own, the Alert 360 team understands how much time is spent on the road, in our valued family vehicles,” said Richard Ginsburg, CEO of Alert 360. “Our goal with the Connected Car device is to provide an easy way to integrate auto, home automation and home security – plus receive vehicle status reports – through this convenient new service and our free mobile app.” “When we released the new Connected Car option in May, it was a natural extension of our award-winning home and business security services. The Alert 360 team will continue to develop new options for increasing security for our customers and making lives easier. The Connected Car, along with our recently released smart doorbell, are just a few examples of how we can help.” (The Alert 360 Smart Video Doorbell 2.0 provides the latest in video analytics, more useful alerts, two-way audio, and 150-degree, HD viewing. This advanced doorbell is also an easy way to keep an additional eye on your vehicles and property.) Via https://www.alert360.com/2021/07/connected-car-prevent-vehicle-theft-vandalism-diagnostics/ Are you making these top 10 home security mistakes? Avoid these common mistakes to save valuable property, lives and increase your safety With nearly 50 years of experience in home security, we at Alert 360 have heard both tragic and miraculous stories from home and business owners. We hear these stories during initial consultations for a monitored security system or after an alarm activation and follow up with emergency personnel. These stories can be either heartbreaking or heartwarming – sometimes both. From these actual life events, the following are the top home security mistakes we’ve witnessed over the years: Believing a Break-in or Emergency will Never Happen at your Home A recent crime report from the FBI estimated there were more than 1.2 million burglaries, resulting in $3.4 billion in property losses in one year alone. Overall crime has increased during the pandemic. Chances are, you know someone who has been the victim of a home break-in, property loss, or property damage. Sadly, break-ins aren’t the only threat to homeowners. One of the largest insurance claims is related to water damage. At Alert 360, our home security and protection services include devices that monitor and alert homeowners to water leaks, smoke, temperature changes or access to sensitive areas. In addition, our life-safety medical alert option helps ensure your elderly loved ones receive critical assistance sooner rather than later. When you include these home security services along with intrusion detection and security video monitoring you enjoy more complete protection of the property, people and pets you value most. Ignoring Front Door and Porch Security One of the most common entries for thieves is the front door, and most burglaries actually occur during the day. Simply being aware of who visits your home – whether you are home or not – can increase home security. The easiest way to protect your front door is with an outdoor security camera or video doorbell. Alert 360’s video doorbell camera provides security where it’s needed most – at your front door. This camera provides the added benefit of allowing you to talk to visitors without opening the door, whether you are home or across town. Also, keep these top tips in mind for increasing your front door security with or without outdoor home security cameras: • Screen visitors before opening the door. Install peepholes and ask to see identification from service and delivery people. Warmer weather is also the season for door-to-door sales. While some visitors who come to our doors don’t appear threatening, it’s wise to be cautious of scams; Believing Home Break-ins Only Occur at Night As mentioned above, most home break-ins actually occur during the day. It’s true that some thieves will attempt car break-ins at night. However, homes are most vulnerable when you’re at work or have left doors and garages open or unlocked in the daytime. Easy steps to prevent daytime break-ins include: • Ensuring doors are locked even when you’re home; Trying to DIY or Self Monitor your Home Security System There is some peace of mind from at least having a security system. However, without professional alarm monitoring, there’s always the risk you might miss an important notification or not alert authorities in time. Monitored smoke, heat, intrusion, panic or medical alerts need immediate attention. With a professionally monitored security system, the alarm center can call for help even when you can’t, often within a matter of seconds. This response has proved to save lives and property. Having that responsibility on your shoulders while trying to enjoy a vacation, during an important meeting, or sleeping deeply is an unnecessary burden and potentially costly. Alert 360 provides affordable, award-winning alarm monitoring because our mission is to help save lives and property. The Alert 360 family also knows how busy life can get, without adding life-safety and security monitoring to your plate. We’re passionate about monitoring our customers’ homes and businesses and are proud to have one of the fastest alarm response rates in the industry. Forgetting External Security Threats and Landscaping Hazards are a common home security mistake It’s wonderful if you have a monitored security system that includes indoor and outdoor security cameras. However, if your home is hard to see from the road or surrounded by large trees or shrubs, you’re creating ideal hiding places for thieves. When these thieves are casing your neighborhood, you’ll want to send a signal that your home hasn’t put out the welcome mat for them. We mentioned a few landscaping tips related to increasing security at your front door. But there is still more than you can do all around your yard. Following are a few, easy home improvement and landscaping tips you can take to increase your home security. • Prune shrubs, trees and bushes to reduce hiding places for thieves; Not Including Lighting in your Home Security Plan A home that appears occupied is less likely to be broken into. In addition to giving the appearance, you are home through two-way voice doorbell cameras, automated or smart lighting will signal to thieves to pick another home. It’s easy enough to add smart lighting to your home security system and to set automated schedules or control them using our free Alert 360 mobile security app. Smart lighting is one of the simplest and smartest steps to add security to your home. So avoid this home security mistake! Ignoring the Power of Neighborhood Watch or Similar Programs Getting to know your neighbors and being aware of usual and unusual activity in your neighborhood goes a long way in protecting your home. Neighborhood apps, such as Nextdoor help share insight concerning car break-ins at night, questionable door-to-door sales, lost pets and more. If your home has outdoor security cameras, you’ll be able to share if someone is casing the neighborhood or appears suspicious. Be sure to report suspicious neighborhood activity to local authorities. For more tips that help increase front door and neighborhood security, read “Prevent Crime in your Neighborhood.” Leaving your Home Vulnerable to Break-ins when you Vacation When preparing to leave town, there are a few things you can do to increase the security of your home while away. Of course, if you have home security cameras and an Alert 360 security system, it’s easy enough to control lighting, smart locks and your alarm via our mobile app. However, if you don’t have a security system, at the least have your mail stopped through USPS.com or have a trusted neighbor pick yours up daily. Using smart lighting and arranging for continued lawn care to give the appearance you are home is also wise. Using the steps above to create a more secure front entrance also apply before you head out on the road. Finally, try not to broadcast on social media that you are out of town. Wait to share fun family pics until after you return. Thinking your Family Pet is Security Enough It’s true that a barking dog can help deter some thieves. However, most experienced thieves know that Fido can easily be distracted with a treat. Additionally, even the smartest dog can’t dial 911 if there’s a break-in, fire, or carbon monoxide emergency and you can’t get to the phone. Not Arming your Security System Sounds crazy, right? But we’ve heard it plenty of times. You’re just running to the store or taking the kids to school. A bad guy can take advantage of these quick trips while you’re away from home. The best way to secure your home is to make it a habit to always arm your security system. If you forget in a hurry to get out the door, we make it easy to arm your security system after you leave with our mobile app or convenient Connected Car security option.
